Ugly duckling…

It is common to watch many varieties of ducks and swans in a pond or a lake. Some are beautiful to look and some are relatively ugly to look at. It is also normal for a person to immediately appreciate the one which looks beautiful. We make the risky assumption that anything which looks beautiful has to be nice also. It may well be that the beautiful swan you like is arrogant, greedy and ugly inside and the duck which looks ugly may be a soft, peaceful and beautiful inside. The same happens when you look at people to position them in your mind. Appearance is one low-level of judgment but the real judgement comes out when you know the person inside and also when you look at the person’s behaviour under pressure.

“Every time you see a beautiful woman, just remember someone got tired of her”
- Kinky Friedman
Imputing… we do it all the time. We assume certain qualities about a product or person based on our observation of others. A person with OUR sense of humour must be “balanced”, A person who is short tempered must be rude. Someone who is fashion conscious must be facile. A wearer of khadi must be patriotic ( he may not be paying his taxes … how patriotic is that?) All products by a certain company MUST be “great”. The externally beautiful must be internally wonderful as well !
It’s tough to view each transaction individually and not reference it to something else. But it can be done with conscious effort.
